Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest is located in the North Western part of Uganda with vegetation, wildlife, ecology and greater ecosystem of Murchison Falls National Park forming part of the Albertine Rift. Budongo forest comprises of rich biodiversity, large population of wild chimpanzees, extensive mahogany forests that make the forest exceptional to explore and adventure. The forest is situated in Masindi District about 3–4 hours’ drive from Kampala and a distance of 30 kms from Masindi town.
Access routes:
Kampala – Masindi – Budongo Forest. It is accessible via the road leading to Murchison Falls National Park and covers an area of about 825 square kilometers at an altitude of 700–1,270 meters above sea level.
Budongo is a tropical moist semi-deciduous forest dominated by hardwood tree species. The forest includes the Khaya anthotheca, Entandrophragma cylindricum which reach heights of over 50 meters forming a dense, high canopy, mixed forest with Celtis mildbraedii, Chrysophyllum albidum, Ficus. These are known to have high biodiversity and diverse wildlife habitats.
Wildlife in Budongo Forest
Budongo Forests one of Uganda’s richest forests in terms of fauna. The Faunal species you watch in the forest include; Primates that are trekked here by many travelers visiting the forest. There are more than 600 individuals in the forest that are trekked as you traverse from one point to another for a period of 2 to 4 hours. These are later found and in an hour, you shall stay in their presence taking many photos to keep with you. Other primates you watch include; Black-and-white colobus monkey, Olive baboon, Blue monkeys. You shall also watch mammals like Forest elephant, Bush pig, Duiker.
Bird species you can watch in the forest include; over 360 bird species i.e Puvel’s illadopsis, Chocolate-backed kingfisher, White-thighed hornbill as well as insects, Butterflies, Moths, Reptiles and amphibians.
Chimpanzee Research
Budongo is home to the rare species of chimpanzees that are trekked in the green forest vegetation as you follow varying trails from one point to another and when you meet them, an hour will be allowed to stay in their presence taking many photos to keep. While in the presence of the chimpanzees, you shall learn about their behavior, forest conservation strategies, as well as their communities and leadership procedure.

Chimpanzee tracking
Chimpanzee Tracking is the most prominent safari adventure carried out in the forest. This offers you a chance to trek and watch the rare species of Chimpanzees in their natural forest habitat. The walks are done along trails found within the Kaniyo Pabidi Sector, Busingiro Sector (Royal Mile), sonso Area.
Birdwatching
Bird watching is amazing to do in the forest and this offers you a chance to watch many bord species as they fly around their natural forest vegetation habitat. The bird species you watch in the forest include; over 360 species i.e Nahan’s Francolin, Puvel’s Illadopsis, Chocolate-backed Kingfisher, and Yellow-footed Flycatcher, Nahan’s Francolin (or Partridge) (Ptilopachus nahani), Puvel’s Illadopsis (Illadopsis puveli), Yellow-footed Flycatcher (Muscicapa sethsmithi), Black-eared Ground Thrush, Kingfishers, Chocolate-backed, Blue-breasted, African Dwarf, African Pygmy Kingfishers, Cameroon Sombre Greenbul, Spotted Greenbul, Olive-green Camaroptera, Yellow-browed Camaroptera, chestnut-capped Flycatcher, Ituri Batis, Fire-crested Alethe, Cassin’s Spinetail, White-thighed Hornbill, Yellow-crested Woodpecker, African Emerald Cuckoo and Western Black-headed Oriole.

Budongo Forest Reserve is one of Uganda’s most important tropical forests an ecotourism destination within Murchison Falls National Park. Ecotourism in Budongo focuses on responsible travel to natural areas to enhance conservation. The major eco tourism activities in the forest are Chimpanzee Tracking, Guided Nature Walks, Birdwatching.
Cultural Encounters
Budongo Forest Reserve is not only known for its rich biodiversity and chimpanzees, but also for the vibrant cultural heritage of the surrounding communities. Cultural encounters are an important part of ecotourism in the Budongo area as they offer adventures in which travelers interact with local people, learn traditional practices, experience rural Ugandan life.
Communities Around Budongo Forest that are adventured and explored include; ethnic groups like the Banyoro (dominant group in the region), Alur and other migrant communities who Depend on the forest for resources and have deep cultural ties to the land. What to expect in these adventures include; Village Visits which teach you how daily life activities, visit homesteads, interact with families, cook traditional meals, learn household practices and participate in farming. You shall engage in traditional music and dance, drumming sessions and Folk songs. You shall also engage in craft making and art of items like Baskets, Mats, Wood carvings. Involve in Traditional Medicine and Forest Knowledge, Medicinal plants and Herbal remedies as well as storytelling and Oral Traditions where you listen to Folktales, Myths about the forest.
How to Get to Budongo Forest
Budongo Forest Reserve is located in northwestern Uganda and can be accessed by use of Road and Air which are preferred by the travelers interested in exploring the green forest.
By Road
Road transport is the most common and convenient way to reach Budongo Forest with the main Route being
Kampala – Masindi – Budongo Forest in a distance of 220–250 kms for a period of 4–5 hours. Kampala to Masindi – tarmac (paved road) and Masindi to Budongo – murram (dirt road).
Access from Masindi
Masindi is the nearest major town to Budongo Forest taking you a period of 30 kms for a period of 45 minutes to 1 hour with various access points like kaniyo Pabidi (main tourist entry point), Busingiro (Royal Mile) (birdwatching area) and the Sonso (research area). The roads in the region are dusty in the dry seasons and muddy during the rainy season.
By Air
Domestic flights
Travelers can fly from the Entebbe International Airport/ Kajjansi Airfield to Pakuba Airstrip or Bugungu Airstrip (near Murchison Falls). The flight duration takes a period of 1 hour. From the airstrip, you shall drive to Budongo Forest Reserve for a period of 1–2 hours depending on location.
